Creating Space for Women in Computing
The ACM-W Fez Chapter, the first of its kind in Morocco, focuses on supporting and advancing women in computing and technology. Its work centres on creating opportunities for students and women in computer science through learning, mentorship, collaboration, and professional development. Through workshops, webinars, and community-led initiatives, the chapter promotes inclusion, innovation, and knowledge sharing across the wider technology ecosystem.
Research Grounded in Openness and Collaboration
Ghita Lazrek, Founder and Chair of the ACM-W Fez Chapter, brings a research background in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Medical Things. Her work aligns closely with the principles of Open Science, particularly in supporting open knowledge sharing, collaborative research, and access to scientific resources. She views these practices as essential to accelerating innovation while ensuring that research remains inclusive and widely accessible.
Encouraging Participation in Emerging Practices
The chapter identifies awareness as one of the main challenges in advancing Open Science within its community. Encouraging students and early-career researchers to engage with open research practices requires sustained effort, particularly where these approaches are still developing.
Limited access to resources and training opportunities can also slow adoption, while building a culture of collaboration and open knowledge sharing takes time. The organisation continues to address these challenges through community engagement and targeted initiatives.
Linking Inclusion with Open Science in the Region
The decision to join the Forum for Open Research in MENA (FORM) reflects a shared focus on collaboration and inclusion. For the ACM-W Fez Chapter, Open Science is closely connected to making knowledge more accessible and equitable, particularly for women and early-career researchers. Through this partnership, the chapter aims to expand opportunities for training, networking, and knowledge exchange, while contributing to a more inclusive and diverse research environment across Morocco and the wider MENA region.
