We are pleased to welcome the Arab Federation for Libraries and Information as a new member of the Forum for Open Research in MENA (FORM). This collaboration brings into our network a leading regional organisation with a longstanding commitment to strengthening the role of libraries and information professionals across the Arab world.
Founded in Tunisia in 1986, AFLI serves as a central platform for library and information specialists, supporting the development of the profession through coordinated regional efforts. As an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organisation, it has played a sustained role in advancing librarianship and information science, while encouraging co-operation between institutions working across different national and institutional contexts.
AFLI’s work spans a wide range of activities that support knowledge exchange and professional growth. Through conferences, training programmes, workshops, and webinars, the federation contributes to building capacity and strengthening the skills of librarians across the region. These efforts are closely tied to a broader vision of reinforcing the role of libraries within society, not only as repositories of knowledge, but as active contributors to research, education, and public engagement.
Collaboration remains a defining element of AFLI’s approach. The federation works closely with regional and international organisations, including the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, with which it has established a Memorandum of Understanding. Through such partnerships, AFLI continues to support joint initiatives that advance professional standards, encourage shared learning, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the field.
“AFLI’s engagement with the Forum for Open Research in MENA reflects a strategic commitment to advancing Open Science in the Arab region, by joining a collaborative platform that ‘facilitates the exchange of actionable insights and the development of practical policies.’ This step signals AFLI’s intent to strengthen the role of libraries as key enablers of accessible, inclusive, and sustainable research ecosystems, while contributing to cross-regional cooperation and capacity building in open knowledge practices.” – Prof. Emad Eisa Saleh, President, Arab Federation for Libraries & Information
We look forward to working with AFLI through shared initiatives, continued dialogue, and collaborative efforts that support open, connected, and resilient research ecosystems across the region.
