Announcing our first Keynote: Heather Joseph (SPARC)

As the date of the 2023 Annual Forum draws closer, we are delighted to announce the first of our Keynote Speakers: Heather Joseph, Executive Director of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).

SPARC is an international coalition of academic and research libraries promoting the open sharing of knowledge. Under her stewardship, SPARC has become the leading advocacy organization promoting innovative open and equitable global systems of research and education. Based in Washington, D.C., Heather Joseph leads SPARC’s strategy and policy work, which led to the establishment of the landmark 2023 White House Memorandum requiring open access to all U.S. federally funded research outputs.  Internationally, she has worked on initiatives and consultations promoting the open sharing of research outputs at the United Nations, the World Bank, the OECD and UNESCO.

We are honoured to have such a widely respected expert on national and international open research policies, practices and implementation strategies deliver our keynote at the 2023 Annual Forum, titled: “Open Sharing of Knowledge for the Benefit of the Global Community”. We are also delighted to have Heather’s support and advocacy for our work as an initiative promoting the development and implementation of open science policies and practises in higher education and research communities across the Arab world.

“The work of the Forum for Open Research in encouraging broad collaboration across the Arab world speaks directly to the goal of this year’s International Open Access Week of ensuring that the needs of local communities are centered in our global research and education ecosystem.”
