Goals & Strategy
Our mission is to support the advancement of Open Science practices in research libraries and universities across the Arab world, by facilitating the exchange of actionable insights and the development of practical policies.
SUPPORT
The advancements of Open Science ecosystems in HEIs and RLs across Arab world
CREATE
Accessible and localized resources relating to the implementation of Open Science policies and practises
ENCOURAGE
Collaborative community partnerships and cooperation between members and partners of FORM
CHAMPION
The development of RTL functionality in key open source and open science technological solutions
In addition to these overarching goals, we have identified six strategic priorities, aligned with UNESCO’s broader Open Science Recommendations but reflecting the specific needs of the Arab world’s research communities.
POSITION STATEMENT
Establishing Open Science terminologies in Arabic, and demonstrating its value for key stakeholder demographics
COLLABORATION
Encouraging cross-regional dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaborative partnership opportunities
POLICIES & STRATEGIES
Developing supportive national and institutional policies and incentivisation strategies
CAPACITY BUILDING
Ensuring necessary human and digital capacity needs are identified and developed
RESOURCE ACCESSIBILITY
Empowering stakeholders via the development of tools and resources suitable for the region, including Arab language documentation and RTL digital functionality
STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
Building and maintaining trust in Open Science, and encouraging stakeholder engagement via incentivisation strategies
Our focus at this stage is on development – on building the resources, the membership, the organisational structures, and the broader community. This is reflected in our Objectives for 2023-2025.
However, this is just the first stage of a much longer process. The transition towards more accessible, inclusive and sustainable research ecosystems takes time, and requires deep-seated socio-cultural adjustments at every stakeholder level. Therefore, we’re adopting a 3-stage plan, based on supporting rather than forcing change.
STAGE 1
Develop membership community and resources for institutions and individuals
STAGE 2
Work with institutions to reform faculty KPIs and develop structural frameworks for Open Science practices
STAGE 3
Institutional advocacy at governmental level for inclusion of Open Science KPIs for institutions
