Making Space on the Shelves: Open Access Books in Open Science
This free workshop was hosted by the Forum for Open Research in MENA (FORM), in partnership with Kevin Sanders from Open Book Collective and Dr. Kira Hopkins from Opening the Future, on July 8, 2025.
The workshop explored why this expansion of open access to books is so vital, particularly for amplifying the reach and impact of research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. It will unpack the unique considerations for open access in the book world compared to journals, and trace the fascinating journey of its funding, both past and future.
The workshop covered:
Understanding the role of books in the OA ecosystem
Sharing some of the histories and development of OA funding models
Better understanding of the contemporary global OA ecology
Develop understandings of the vitality of open infrastructures for open access publishing
Increase awareness of diamond and community-led open access models and operations
